Games to Watch: Weeks 4 & 5

Week 4
Alcoa @ Greeneville: The King of 3A squares against one of the best in Class 4A when Alcoa travels to Greeneville. This will be the first time these 2 programs have met since 2012 

Knox. West @ Maryville: This has been a series that has been dominated by Maryville until last year when West emerged victorious for their 1st win over Maryville since 1996. 

Peabody @ Adamsville: Despite this game being in the first half of the season, the winner of this contest might be the difference bewteen making the playoffs and sitting at home. 

Wilson Central @ Green Hill: Like the game above, this will have big playoff implications in Region 4-6A (which you can say for alot of games in that league). Wildcat HC Ben Kuhn was the Offensive Coordinator at Green Hill for the last few years.

Henry County @ Brentwood: This game showcases two programs that represent a contrast in styles. Brentwood is going to spread it out and win with balance, HC is going to be physical and run downhill. This contrast has produced some fun games the last decade.

Riverdale @ Germantown: Could be a preview of a 6A title game. I consider both team to be among the top 6-8 l. These teams have only faced twice before (1994, 2003), both of which were in 5A title game.

Lipscomb Academy @ Baylor: The 1st big showdown of teams in II-AAA. Will feature the potential passing attack of Baylor v. the stout defense of LA. Five Power 5 commits from C/O 2024 will be in this game .

MBA @ CPA: Despite both programs being private schools and residing in the same city,  this will only be the 5th match-up bewteen these 2 teams. CPA HC Ingle Martin starred at MBA in the late 90s/ early 00's

Week 5
McCallie @ Brentwood Academy: McCallie has been the king of II-AAA the last 4 years, winning 3 titles in that time frame. BA poses a big threat to that success led by QB George MacIntyre.

Houston @ Whitehaven: This contest will have big playoff implications in Region 8-6A. Possible the loser of this game misses the playoffs.

Crockett County @ Huntingdon: A match-up of 2 programs that have aspirations of deep playoff runs in their respective classes

Cane Ridge @ Stewarts Creek: Should be a match-up of the 2 top teams in Region 5-6A. The Ravens are 40-2 in region contests since 2016.

Rockvale @ Riverdale: Likely determines who finishes 2nd in 3-6A and gets to host a playoff game.

 Green Hill @ Lebanon: Like alot of games in 4-6A thus year, this game could decide a region championship or who makes the playoffs.

White County @ Upperman: As far as I can tell, this is the first meeting bewteen these 2 schools. White County is coming off one of the best seasons in school history and Upperman will be one of the teams in the running for a trip to the BlueCross Bowl in 4A.

6A Storylines for this season

Today I'm talking about the storyline in 6A that intrigue me the most. This isn't a preview, more like a glance at most of the teams that will contend in 6A this year.... Can Maryville continue its 2-6A dominance? For the last 25 years Maryville has been not only one of the most dominant programs in the state, but the country as well, winning an incredible 14 state championships over the last quarter century, with 6 of those titles occurring after they jumped up to Class 6A. While Maryville hasn't won a state championship since 2019, they've still been nearly automatic in region play, winning 22 league championships in a row, but that could all change in 2023. Bearden, Bradley Central and Cleveland all could challenge the Rebels for the region crown. Bearden boasts a young but talented team that showed improvement over the course of the 2022 season. Top hires from off-season

The 10 Coaching hires that caught my eye this off-season (in no particular order) Jamaal Stewart ( Centennial ): Not sure alot of people expected Centennial to hit a home run in their search for a Head Coach, but that's exactly what they did in hiring Stewart. He comes by way of East Nashville where he took them to heights they've never gone before finishing runner-up each of the last 2 seasons.  He takes over a Centennial team that had a nice bounce back season, going 8-3 and making the playoffs for the first time in 5 seasons. They will move down to 5A , competing in District 6, which features tough programs like Page and Nolensville Matt Kriesky ( Blackman ): it always seemed inevitable that Kriesky would make his way back to Rutherford County, a place that he spent alot of his years as an assistant.  Kriesky had an up and down tenure at Centennial (which has never been an easy job), but he will bring a toughness and stability that Blackman has sorely lacked in recent year
