1A Overlook

So to be upfront, 1A is an area where I don't have a great deal of knowledge. I'm gonna throw on some teams that I think have a good chance to win state......

Coalfield: Coach Benson Napier has done a great job in his 2 seasons at Coalfield, going 22-5 despite having one of the smallest enrollments in 1A. They were thisclose to going to the BlueCross Bowl last year. They'll be one of the teams on the East side if the bracket in the mix

South Pittsburg: If SP wasn't the favorite from the East to go to Chattanooga, they are now with the addition of Martavious Collins. Don't see alot of SEC commits in 1A, hard to imagine teams being able to stop him on offense or defense.

Clay County: Clay County didn't mess around in Year 1 under Bruce Lamb, winning a school record 13 games and making it all the way to the 1A title game. It'll be interesting to see if they can repeat last season's success

Gordonsville: Year 1 under Stephen Jackson was pretty successful with Gordonsville advancing to the quarterfinals for a 4th season in a row. To get further, they are going to need to find a way to beat Clay or SP, possibly both

Moore County:  The Raiders return a large amount of their team that went 10-2, falling in the 2nd round to eventual champion McKenzie. McKenzie graduated alot of production, so the pieces are there for MC to make a deep run

McKenzie: As I alluded to, McKenzie is losing a lot from their state championship team. I don't expect then to be in a rebuilding year, but it may take them a little bit to get their legs under them. Could be a tough out come playoff time

Union City & Dresden: Will likely be a 2 horse race in 7-1A this season. Union City is coming off a good 10-3 campaign from last season when they were in 2A. Dresden improved in 2022 and they'll need to make more improvements to catch UC.

MASE: MASE made a big leap in 2022, going from 3-6 record in 2021 to all the way to the 1A semifinals. Non-region match-ups against Lausanne and Peabody should be a good indicator on if they're able to make another deep run
